Wrens are small songbirds, generally with brown feathers and a slender, down-turned beak. They are native to North and South America, Asia, and Europe. The wren is one of the most beloved songbirds of all time, and it is truly a pleacertain to hear them singing in the morning.

If you are like most people who endelight listening to the song of the wren, then it is a good idea to get a hold of a few wren house plans so you can build your own wren house in your backyard.

But what precisely are wren house plans? These are blueprints that will guide you in creating a dwelling that is specwhetherically suited to the wren. Although the wren house plans are specificly laid out for wrens, it is inevitable that other species of birds will also be attracted to the bird refuge.

Wren house plans may be obtained through the Internet. There are many dwhetherferent designs to choose from, so you have to be careful in chooseing which one is the best for your specific purpose. To aid in your chooseion, here are a few helpful points to consider:

1. Make certain that the wren house plans include hinged doors that can supply easy access to the inside of the home. This can be useful when checking the house for eggs.

2. Choose wren house plans that use lightweight fabric for building the structure. If you reduce the weight of the bird house, you will also reduce its risk of falling down.

3. Wren house plans indicate the size of the finished bird house. Check that the bird house will supply enough space for the wren to move around inside, but will not be too big as to attract larger birds. An ideal compartment will meacertain 6×6x12 inches.

4. For each compartment, there should be a perch outside the entry gap so the birds can all rest outside their rooms at the same time.

5. It is also important to have an insulated attic in your bird house. This will keep the wrens warm and cozy specificly during the cold months.

Hermit Crab Habitats

Tuesday 21 August 2007 @ 7:14 pm

Although hermit crabs may be purchased in tiny terrariums, they require a much larger habitat to live comfortably. A hermit crab will be fine in a 10-gallon or larger aquarium. Line the bottom of the tank with sand or stones, so your pet(s) have an easier time walking around.

Two shallows dishes of water are required - one filled with salt-water and one filled with dechlorinated fresh water. Additives can be purchased at pet stores to be added to water for each of these. Having sponges in each dish works well in helping hermit crabs obtain the water, and in adding humidity to the habitat. It’s a good idea to place the water dishes down into the substrate (gravel, sand, etc.), to prevent the crabs from knocking it over while they may attempt to dig under or climb over the dishes.

Include at least one food dish for your hermit crabs. They tend to eat at night, so don’t worry if you don’t see them eating during the day. Food can be purchased in pellets or a powdery mixture. Crabs also eat raw vegetables like carrots, small pieces of fish or meat, or boiled egg shells. These foods can be used as a supplement to their diet.

Hermit crabs love to climb and hide, so including pieces of driftwood and other pet-friendly obstacles are a good idea. It’s wise to purchase these items from pet stores, as they are produced to be non-toxic and safe for use with animals. Just make sure nothing is tall enough to provide a way out of the habitat for your crabs!

Be sure to provide plenty of empty shells in a variety of sizes. Hermit crabs are always on the lookout for a better shell. Make sure to have a variety of shells in different shapes and styles, and with various opening sizes. You never know what type of shell a hermit crab may like, and if a good selection is not provided, crabs can fight over the best ones!

A thermometer and humidity gauge will also be required. Your tank needs to be kept between 72 and 82 degrees, as hermit crabs are used to warm weather. To heat the habitat, an under-tank heater may be used, or low wattage lighting can provide a little heat, too. The humidity must be between 70 and 80 percent to keep the crabs healthy. A lid will work well to keep moisture inside the habitat, and also to keep your climbing crabs inside their home.

Remember to check these elements often to ensure the safety, health and happiness of your hermit crabs.

Leopard Geckos

Wednesday 15 August 2007 @ 10:13 pm

Leopard Geckos (Eublepharis macularius) are found in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India. They inhabit arid areas. They grow to be around 45-110 grams. Lifespan can be from 10 years to rare documented cases of 20+ years. Males are identified by growing larger and having a more slender body than females. Males can also be sexed by checking the area behind their hind limbs. A noticeable row of preanal pores and a hemipenile bulge.
Housing: Leopard Geckos are nocturnal and will hide most of the day. Being a terrestrial lizard they do not climb glass or walls. A simple set up for housing would be a ten gallon tank with an under the tank heater. Make sure one side of the cage is 90 degrees and the other half is room temp. around 70ish. Provide a few hide spots for the guys. One on the warm and one on the cold side. A hide box (gladeware) with peat moss that is sprayed with water daily also helps with shedding and females laying eggs.

Feeding and water:
Food: Make sure the invertebrates are gut loaded for 24 hours before feeding. Their diet consists of mealworms and crickets. Waxworms, superworms, and newborn mice can also be feed when needed. Make sure to supplement your gecko’s diet with vitamin/mineral powder. A jar lid of calcium and vitamin D3 placed in their cage allows them to consume the proper amount. Provide food to babies and juvenile leopard geckos everyday. If you feed crickets remove any crickets that they do not eat. Adults can be feed every other day. If they are breeding make sure females have food available every day.
Water: Provide fresh water to juvenile and babies everyday. Twice a week to adult geckos. To learn more go to my website.
