One of the many adorable toy breeds is the Pomeranian. These small dogs are members of the Spitz group. The ancestors of the Pomeranian were sled dogs originating in and around Iceland. In the late 1800s some of these larger, hardier sled dogs were bred down to toy size. Pomeranians, which were bred down from the German Spitz, are one example.

In appearance, a Pomeranian puppy has the overall look of a baby fox. It has a wedge-shaped head, a black nose, dark eyes, a gorgeous, thick double-layer of fur often seen in a red shade called sable, and a thick, furry tail that it carries high and curled over its back.

A Pomeranian puppy requires discipline from an early age due to the fact that this breed is willful and demanding by nature. Pomeranians are also known to be highly energetic, affectionate, smart and curious. Their double coat of fur requires twice weekly brushing but infrequent bathing as this can wash away essential oils. Some of the more creative names include Crimson, Firenze, Artemis and Abracadabra. Another option is to name the tiny Pomeranian something opposite its size such as Goliath, Bear or Lord of Windsor. The most important thing to remember in naming a Pomeranian puppy is that this is the name it will be using for as much as the next nineteen years.

The Poodle is one of the most trainable breeds of dogs. These dogs are easy to train, as they are always eager to please their owners and are by nature easygoing animals. The basic Poodle obedience training has it that the dog should know a few standard commands such as come, sit, down, heel, among others.

The Poodle is a great companion dog but it tends to have socializing problems at times. Therefore, it is often advisable to have your Poodle enrolled in a training class instead of having the trainer come home for training. In this way, your dog will learn as a by-product to socialize as well both with animals and people.

Among the most common commands your Poodle should learn will be sit, come, down, stay, heel and the like. You can teach these basic obedience commands at home as well because the Poodle is an easily trainable dog. However, having a trainer do it will be faster and less cumbersome for you.

The first basic command will be to teach your dog to come to you. This is one of the easiest of all Poodle obedience training because this is what it always loves to do ? come to you. All you have to do is make it do so at your command rather at its will. Put your dog on a long leash and walk ahead of the dog. When you are a little far, turn and show it the treat at the same time saying out loud come. As your Poodle bounces up to you, give it the treat and praise it loudly.

You need to teach this command initially with the leash on and then without the leash. Try making it more and more difficult like giving the command of come from inside the house, or a place where it cannot see you. Give this about a week’s time by the end of which you will find that the dog will have mastered the command.

Teaching the command heel to you Poodle may be the most difficult of all. This is because this dog is very restless and bubbly and too excited to find out what all the world is offering it to suppress its curiosity. In fact, this is the exact reason why Poodle obedience training should include this particular command.

Raise the hand above the dog’s head slowly ensuring that it is following the movement and then lower it towards its tail. At this point the dog will sit down so it can continue to watch your hand. Say the command loudly, give the treat and praise it profusely.

Repeat this until the dog stops pulling at the leash. As soon as you achieve this, give the dog the treat and praise it lavishly.

Pet overpopulation, genetics, politics and economics, who knew getting a puppy from a pet store, can be so complicated. You probably thought those big brown puppy eyes are the only thing that matters but as with everything in the world today. Things are not as easy as that.

Labradors are considered the world’s most popular dogs. Even as we speak, Labrador breeders are competing and tirelessly trying to produce the best Lab ever. Unfortunately this article is not all about the fine points of the Labrador breed or the art of being a Labrador breeder. This article is about the sad fact that today, pet stores are the life and blood of puppy mills.

Puppy mills and puppy mill owners are atrocious people who do not care for the well being of Labrador puppies. They are in the business of raising dogs for money and because Labradors are in demand it is one of the commonly victimized breed.

Ninety percent of Labradors sold in pet stores come from puppy mills. Commercial Labrador breeders are very wise. They keep their breeding facilities just over animal cruelty standards but still the conditions are deplorable. Most of the people who own puppy mills begin with good intentions. Sadly greed sets in and when this happens they don’t maintain their facilities and they simply keep the dogs for the purpose of income generation.

Labrador breeders on the other hand are pretty different, because they are artists in the dog world. They breed dogs not necessarily for income but in the quest for the perfect Labrador in looks, temperament and intelligence. Labrador breeders don’t just sell puppies to anyone they make you prove that you deserve their priced doggies before even considering of letting you own one. Like Hollywood, the pet store industry has been plagued with scandals since time immemorial. The incalculable bulk of Labradors sold at pet stores are bred from puppy mills. Pet shops are very well known to be financing and keeping the puppy mill industry alive.

The callousness does not stop there. When these puppies are shipped, they are put in cramped boxes and arrive at pet stores inundated by their own urine and excrement. What’s more, according to one pet shop employee, these puppies are kept in cat carriers and stacked in the backrooms. You can hear the puppies’ wine from hunger, dirt and sickness.

Not only that but dogs produced by commercial Labrador breeders have a tendency to be ill or genetically defective. The illnesses start with the mothers, and are passed on to the puppies. Common illnesses are fleas, ear infections, mange and bronchial illnesses. Genetics also plays a part because some puppies are a product of in breeding. Some diseases or defects may have arisen from the way these puppies traveled from the puppy mills to the pet shops. These defects are, hip deformities, sprains and bone problems. Still others are afflicted by bad vision, hearing problems and epilepsy.

So the next time a pet store owner tells you that he got his puppies from Labrador breeders, let him know that you are no fool. Ask for proper documentation. A responsible and caring owner will look you over before selling you the next cute one.
